Stephen N. Barton, MD, PhD

Stephen N. Barton, a physician and psychiatrist, holds a Doctor of Medicine degree, a PhD degree in Speech Communications, and an MA degree in Public Affairs—all from the University of Minnesota. He has taken special training in public health and psychiatry and is board certified in both psychiatry and preventive medicine. Dr. Barton founded and directed the American Rural Health Association, a forerunner of the National Rural Health Association, and he founded and served as editor-in-chief of two journals: The American Journal of Rural Health and The Journal of Preventive Psychiatry and Neurology. He has contributed to a wide range of research projects—and has served as medical director of numerous specialized psychiatric and community health programs in Alabama, South Carolina, Kentucky, and Minnesota.  In 1994 Dr. Barton received the US Department of Veterans Affairs Service Director Award for leadership in mental health and behavioral sciences.

James S. Simonson is a principal at Gray Plant Mooty law firm and Chair of its Trial Department. Jim practices in the areas of complex commercial litigation—including antitrust and products liability law—at both the trial and appellate court levels. He has tried scores of cases in the state and federal courts and has argued numerous cases before the Minnesota Court of Appeals and Supreme Court—and in the United States Court of Appeals. Selected for listings in The Best Lawyers in America since its inception in 1983, Jim also appears (as he has for many years) in the Minnesota "Super Lawyers" listing. He has also been chosen by some 5,000 voting lawyers as one of the best appellate lawyers in the state of Minnesota. He was recently named one of Minnesota's top seven general commercial litigators by Chambers USA, America's Leading Business Lawyers (2003-2004). Jim received a B. A. degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1956. He received his law degree from Harvard Law School in 1959.
